Actually, it's not the first time at all. All of the "hydrogen firsts" we hear about in the fossil fuel industry's greenwashing schemes to rebrand themselves as "green hydrogen," - a bald faced lie - are rehashes of stuff that's been build, hyped and abandoned hundreds of times before over many decades,

There are actually thousands upon thousands of papers on making hydrogen from biomass, shit, wood, straw, what have you. They go back for quite some time.

Here's a graduate thesis for the same idea published in 1970:

The guy who wrote it when he was a kid has almost certainly retired or maybe he's dead; if he's still alive, he's an old man.

Still, the fact remains, for all the dishonest cheering for the scam - more than half a century of it -hydrogen is still made, overwhelmingly, by exergy destruction of dangerous fossil fuels, making hydrogen a very dirty chemical commodity. It isn't a fuel in any sense of the word, except in cartoonish videos made by the fossil fuel industry to greenwash themselves.
