When you get two groups of men hacking each other into hamburger, at some point their faith in the afterlife is going to fail and the entire mechanism breaks down. Programing all of the parts to think they are one machine instead of individuals makes them more efficient and reduces the incidence of breakdown. However, naturally after a few uses you have to repair it with spare parts or simply replace it and send it in for overhaul.
