Apparently it doesn't afflict their consciences that these people are bringing everything that they can that's left of their former life, as they don't intend to return to their terrifying lives, and they are probably all at their lowest energy level after travelling so far to get that far away from home already, and are being stressed to the max trying to negotiate the horrific challenge of the gap.

Clearly they desperately need every coin they have brought with them. No doubt they would almost rather be killed than to be attacked in that condition.

Same guys probably run to car wrecks as soon as they happen and rob the victims there, too.
