14. He already broke the deal, according to what we know of the 2006 senate election in Vermont.

Sanders won the Democratic primary, but declined the nomination, leaving no Democratic nominee on the ballot. This victory ensured that no Democrat would appear on the general election ballot to split the vote with Sanders, an ally of the Democrats, who has been supported by leaders in the Democratic Party.

It wasn't that he wanted to run as a Democrat, because he was given the Democratic nomination and then declined it. He just didn't want to competition to split the vote. Almost like he expected Democrats to hand him their votes...

The fact that he won his Senate seat due to a back-room deal with party leadership doesn't ever seem to be acknowledged by Sanders any more, though. Is he ashamed of the deal he cut or something? Or, more likely, does it undermine his entire "I'm so principled, I would never cut back-room deals" persona? I'm going with the second option on this one.

I think Democrats need to run an opponent against him in the next election, and if Senate leadership and the DSSC won't support that Democrat, then we the people should fund them instead.
