More a case of trying to gain weight over the course of weeks or months by consuming an abundance of fat and calorie-laden foods 
Eating contests though as you say, are also stupid and dangerous. Hell people have died from water-drinking contests. All these types of things are absolute stupidity and should never be condoned and rewarded
