For one thing ... a bad guy could set up his computer between you and the library without your knowledge. And while you are thinking you are connected to the library's wi-fi you are actually being relayed through the bad guy's machine while he is reading and storing your login info wherever you go. There are many ways to compromise someone's connection. This might shed some light.
