3. To keep deer out you do not need an entire fence

All you need is a simple sting going around the garden tied to post in the four corners. Make it chest height to a deer. They will not step over it or jump over it to get to the vegetables. They will only nibble on what they can reach without stepping over it. The only reason they would ever cross the string boundary would be if the were spooked and were trying to escape danger. If that is the case they will not be staying long enough to eat anything.

For smaller critters such as rabbits and groundhogs this method is not effective. I have heard but not tried using human urine sprinkled around the edges of the garden will keep some critters away.
