Theresa May and Iain Duncan Smith poised to launch backbench rebellion over small boats bill

....The two former Conservative Party leaders have tabled an amendment to the Illegal Migration Bill, which demands that people who have been unlawfully exploited be exempt from the legislation.
It risks causing a major headache for the Prime Minister, who faces the prospect of a powerful rebellion led by two of the most senior backbenchers in the Tory party.
Under current laws, temporary protection is provided to those who are suspected of being victims of human trafficking or modern slavery while their case is heard.
But the proposed bill wants to remove such protections, with both Mr Sunak and his Home Secretary Suella Braverman claiming it is being abused by migrants who are arriving in England from across the Channel.
