5. Horrible. I'm suspicious that something similar happened to my mom.

She fell and broke her ankle one weekend I was visiting her. Called the ambulance and the town is so small the closest hospital is in a town 30 miles away. I handed her purse to one of the EMTs so she would have her ID when she got there and got ready to follow in my car. Didn't think twice about it because the ambulance service is owned and operated by a family in the church mom has attended for decades. The two EMTS on this call were not members of that family, but again, very small town--everybody knows each other.

As it turned out, it wasn't even necessary. I'd assumed they'd get to the hospital long before me, but I caught up enough that I could see them ahead of me on the road for the last few miles. By the time Mom's purse made its way back to me there was no cash in the wallet. I didn't even realize this until a few days later when Mom was making more sense and she asked me to get something and told me to take the money out of her wallet. So I have no proof and Mom could have been mistaken, or some petty thief is using his position of trust to take advantage of vulnerable people. Grr.
