Early voting in the Virginia special election outpaces 2025 governor's race [View all]

As of April 4, a total of 676,502 ballots have been cast early statewide. At the same point in the 2025 election cycle, early voting stood at 658,471, meaning turnout is already running ahead of that high-profile race.

The increase suggests strong voter engagement weeks ahead of Election Day, with several localities, particularly in southeastern coastal Virginia, the Peninsula and the Eastern Shore, leading the way.

Among the highest early voting rates by percentage of registered voters are smaller, coastal and Peninsula communities. Localities on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and Northern Neck, such as Northumberland (21.1%) and Lancaster (19.8%), also rank among the top jurisdictions for early voting turnout.
