CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- This Thursday is the four-year anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally, which resulted in the death of Heather Heyer and injured multiple other people.

On Tuesday, Heyer's mother spoke out on the work that still needs to be done when it comes to fighting extremism.

Susan Bro recalls the day her life was forever changed. She says there's still a long way to go on the journey to ending hate.

But the approaching trial against the Unite the Right organizers is a step in the right direction.

"This was the loss of my baby girl. Heather's death was not in vain. It was a calling out to white America,” said Bro.

She says the wake-up call is that no one is immune to hate, and domestic terrorism and extremism are still a problem. But she says her daughter's death was a turning point for the country.
