Bernie Sanders is a politician tending two audiences — his unflaggingly loyal base in Vermont, and voters across the country.

The upcoming U.S. Senate election will demonstrate how well Sanders can keep both of those plates spinning.

Sanders seeking re-election

The 76-year-old independent senator is seeking a third term representing Vermont while publicly mulling another run for the presidency in 2020.

"I'm just curious to see how he pitches his campaign, whether it is predominantly centered on representing Vermont," said Matthew Dickinson, a Middlebury College political science professor, "or it's viewed as implicitly an opening salvo in his bid for the 2020 Democratic nomination."
