1. My closest encounter with a gator

I was a freshman at the University of Florida and was walking across a broad lawn between dorms. There was a baby gator ahead of me, maybe a foot long. As soon as it spotted me, it reared back, open its jaws, and hissed. I felt like it would attack me if I got any closer. So, I backed away and did a big arc around it. The lesson to me was that these creatures don't fool around. Even a very small one could do some damage and wouldn't mind doing it. The big ones are very fast, so never ever try to get close.
