Montana is the most patriotic state, study finds [View all]

Call it the “Cheers” effect.

That may be one of the best reasons to explain that the average Montanan is more patriotic than most. It is a place where, it seems, everyone knows your name — just like the theme song to popular 1980s sitcom said.

Last week, WalletHub published a study that ranked all states’ patriotism and Montana wound up on top as the most patriotic state.

Although at first glance making a claim like that might seem questionable – for example, is it just a measure of how many flag decals are put on bumpers – researchers used more than a dozen different metrics to establish a definition of patriotism and Montana came out No. 1.

Data suggests Montana’s participation in civic groups and military is exceptionally high, but experts say that because Montana is still a relatively small state in terms of population, and folks feel like they can make a difference by participation.
