17-mile backup on Massachusetts Turnpike follows crash [View all]

The crash closed multiple lanes on the Massachusetts Turnpike late Friday afternoon.

Massachusetts transportation officials are working to ease a multi-mile traffic backup following a four-vehicle crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike Friday.

A crash in the eastbound lanes of the Pike near Exit 10 resulted in a jack-knifed tractor-trailer blocking several lanes along the highway.

The multi-mile backup soon formed, at one point reaching 17 miles west of the crash site, Massachusetts State Police estimate.

The right lanes and the breakdown lane have been reopened, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said at 5:44 p.m. The left lane remains closed.

All four lanes were reopened in the evening.
