Casino cash is beginning to play a role in the buildup to Election Day, when voters will decide whether to repeal expanded gambling in Massachusetts.
The pro-repeal ballot committee has 40 times more donors than the pro-casino group, but has collected seven times less money this year. Spending by casino companies is the driving force behind that trend.
In the latest campaign finance report, which tracks spending and donations from Jan. 1 through Aug. 31, casino companies account for all but $10,150 of the more than $1.78 million the pro-casino Coalition to Protect Mass. Jobs has collected since forming on July 8.
Casino operators MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming represent two of the coalition’s five donors.
