Did you know there are 4 National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom sites in St. Mary's County? [View all]

September is International Underground Railroad Month. To honor the courageous journeys of freedom seekers, be sure to visit:
🛏️The Old Jail Museum (memorial of Benjamin Hance, the only documented lynching victim in St. Mary’s County history)
🏡 Historic Sotterley (exhibits highlighting 165 years of history including slavery and the legacy of systemic racism)
🏫Commemorative to Enslaved Peoples of Southern Maryland at St. Mary's College of Maryland (immersive art experience that honors the story of resilience and creative problem-solving that defined the lives of the enslaved individuals that once lived in St. Mary's City)
🌅Point Lookout State Park & Civil War Museum (significant military site for the United States during the Civil War and facilitated the freedom of numerous enslaved people)
