• In 1845, the town's first settler, Timothy Davis, read admiringly of el-Kader's stand against the French, and decided to name the site of his new flour mill after the Sufi scholar and guerrilla leader. In 1860, el-Kader became an international hero for his role in saving a Christian minority in Syria from tribal violence. Even Abraham Lincoln sang his praises, and sent him a gift: a pair of fancy Colt pistols. But by the time the rest of the world caught on to el-Kader, tiny Elkader had already been honoring him for fifteen years.
