Durbin likens Trump to 'banana republic' leader [View all]

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said Monday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump showed he doesn’t understand “what this country is really all about” by using a debate stage to talk of sending Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to prison.

“Throwing your opponent in jail is what you do in a banana republic,” Durbin, a Springfield Democrat, told reporters before walking to the Sangamon County Complex to cast an early vote in the Nov. 8 election.

At the presidential debate at Washington University in St. Louis Sunday, Trump said that if elected, he would instruct his attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor to further probe issues regarding Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

“It’s just a good thing that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” Clinton said.
