After a very brief internal affairs investigation, the officer who made a controversial arrest of a CVS worker shortly after he left work has been "separated as an employee" of the Edgewater Police Department.
The department made the announcement in a one-line Facebook post on June 5, Thursday evening.
Rippeon arrested Paul Wert, 22, on May 10 while he was sitting on a bench outside a closed CVS on Ridgewood Avenue in Edgewater. Wert, a CVS employee, was waiting for a Lyft transport to take him to his Daytona Beach home.
Rippeon approached Wert and loudly demanded to see his ID, which Wert didn't provide, saying he didn't break any laws. When his Lyft arrived, he said he was going to "go ahead and go," to which Rippeon replied, "No, you're not" and pulled out a taser.
Wert got off the bench for a moment, and Rippeon ordered him to stop, and he sat back down. Rippeon keyed his radio and said, "I've got one resisting."
