On page A8, they have to maps. The first one showing the areas by party preference and the second one showing how the areas voted by candidate.
In the first map, most of the East Country, which has a lower population, is or leans republican while the highest population is overwhelmingly Democratic.
For governor, California has the jungle primary in which the top two candidates receiving the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, advances to the general election. Hilton, the republican, received more votes by area because the Democrats had two top tiered candidates which split the vote making appear that Hilton has broad support in San Diego County. According to the Registrar of Voters, which will certify the election results by uly 3nd, as of June 12th, the top four candidates received the following number of votes:
Hilton (r) - 247,166
Becerra (D) - 226,424
Dteyer (D) - 175.961
Bianco (r) - 69,361

The top two republican candidates received a total of 316,527 votes.
The top two Democratic candidates received a total of 402,385 votes or 85,858 more votes than Hilton and Bianco.
Note: fifth and sixth highest candidates, Porter and Mahan, together received a total of 57,479 giving the Democrats over 140,000 more votes than the republicans received.
Come the general election, I predict Hilton will carry the East County and parts of the North County while Becerra will carry the of the county by a large margin.
