Madiera is a Portuguese island west of Sfrica, about 360 miles. It lays about midway, longitudinally between Marakesh and Casablanca. The Azores are a small archipelago about even with Lisbon, further west. Also Portuguese. Portugal has one other group next to Africa near the equator, Sao tome und Principe, about even with Equatorial Guinea. The Canary islands are Spanish and south of Madeira.
