Neil Young with Devo. [View all]

Neil Young is widely known as the Godfather of grunge music. He was there while Pearl Jam and Nirvana were playing recorder in grade school band.. In particular, "Hey Hey, My MY" stands out as the pattern for those future Seattle bands.

What most don't know, that song had its beginnings in Akron Ohio with Proto Punkers Devo.

On May 28, 1977, Young collaborated with Devo on a version of "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" at the Different Fur studio in San Francisco and would later introduce the song to Crazy Horse. Neil asked asked devo to appear in his movie "Human Highway" as nuclear garbagemen. That led to recording sessions.

During the Different Fur studio sessions, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh added the lyrics "rust never sleeps", a slogan he remembered from his graphic arts career that promoted the automobile rust proofing product Rust-Oleum. Young adopted the line and used it in the Crazy Horse version of the song, as well as for the title of his album.

Sadly. Neil Young has cancelled his upcoming European tour with The Chrome Hearts. It was to begin in June and run three months. He apologized to fans in a message on his website Friday (Feb. 6) while adding “this is not the time.”

I might be biased here because I love Neil Young, and The Spud Boys from Akron as well. They never stop reinventing themselves.
