Both the US and Canada have 6 month tourist visas, meaning if you enter the country with less than six months on your passport, you could legally stay the limit, but then be stateless and forced to remain in the host country.

If you submit a renewal now, you should have your new passport before your trip in October.

The worst that could happen if you don’t is you could be refused entry to Canada and have to remain on your cruise ship.
