I share similar memories having traveled by train between Colorado and Massachusetts several times in the late 50's, early 60's.

Those moving steel plates between cars always fascinated me too: loud and scary as you cross to safety. At big depots and to keep us close by, Mom would gussy us up in those kiddie harnesses that were popular back then. YeeHaw. The other sights, smells and experiences you describe, evoke tons of 65 year old memories as well. Thank you for this well-written post!
