Where I am from, we call the area where the TV, as well as other things that the dwellers usually use every day as the 'living room', and the front room where the 'good' furniture and pictures are as the 'parlor'.

As kids, we were not allowed to play in the parlor because it had to be ready for guests. Now, we seldom had guests, but it was the norm around my house anyway. We did put the tree in that room (mainly because it was in the front and we had to show our 'Christmas spirit'), but other than Christmas and maybe Thanksgiving, we seldom used it.
