2. That's sort of the message of McCarthy's novel, "The Road"

Despite the utter hopelessness of the post-Apocalyptic setting, the unnamed man and boy continue to struggle for survival. What drives the man is protecting the boy and keeping him from seeing the horrors the man encounters, because the boy is "the keeper of the light," innocent and caring, the last glowing ember of human charity, and that must be preserved.
