The Monks would come around early in the morning for alms giving (food, primarily), I or other women had to have a man hand it over as they would not even receive from a woman. I think it has loosened in some areas but I do think not in the hierarchy. So yes they should have been told that so it came as no surprise and nobody should blame the Monks.
