They don't check out early. They don't have too because people like him don't go to jail for very long. For all the serious charges had already been dropped. The remaining one was insignificant and likely wouldn't even get him jail time. Why off himself?
Some of the released files tell the tale. Apparently, his lawyers were in negotiations to spill the beans apparently. I think, some of the emails alludes to this, the fact he was arrested at all pissed him off and he was seeking revenge by outing the people that he thought should have protected him.

I think that was his final and fatal miscalculation. Whomever "they" were decided they didn't want him to do that.
That alone is a little scary. They blacked out security cameras and killed a person and disappeared in a poof of smoke in a federal prison. I have yet to see or hear a reasonable explanation as to why the only cameras that went out were in his area and only for the time around when he died and why not a single news agency will go near that story beyond the official account of the death.
