2. The federal government can fire probationary employees without cause. However....

they cannot be fired for illegal reasons, such as discrimination or retaliation. Probationary employees are protected from being fired for discriminatory reasons, such as those based on age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability. They cannot be terminated in retaliation for whistleblowing or engaging in protected activity. And firing cannot be based on political affiliation or exercising First Amendment rights.

This person was apparently fired for both discriminatory reasons AND for retaliation.
