He may have had genuine friends in the past, but as his narcissism grows, his inability to interact with anyone who isn't a sycophant diminishes. I honestly believe that is why he has made a few statements that puts him slightly at odds with Putin.

In the past, his admiration for dictators and political strongmen was on display as he sought to emulate them. But he has bought into his own delusional PR about his power and stature to the point where now he can't grasp any hierarchy where he isn't at the very top.

He's going to truly forget all the Putin has done for him/has on him and cross Putin because he thinks he can get away with it.
