Massive banners of President Donald Trump's face adorning the exteriors of federal buildings in the nation's capital have led some Democratic lawmakers to draw comparisons to the kind of overt displays of authoritarian propaganda under leaders such as Kim Jong Un, Benito Mussolini and Saddam Hussein.
The banners were installed on the buildings of the Departments of Agriculture, Labor, and Health and Human Services in Washington D.C. They have cost taxpayers at least $50,000, according to a new oversight report released by Democratic Senator Adam Schiff's office this week.
"Dictators throughout history have used oversized portraits to convey their power and intimidate their subjects," the report said. "In addition to the waste of taxpayer funds, the Trump Administrations propaganda banners prompt troubling questions about whether the Trump Administration is deliberately modeling itself after authoritarian regimes."
Over four months, the three federal departments contracted enormous political banners to be hung outside their headquarters. Two were for large banners of Trump's portrait, and one was for an 88-foot sign promoting Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" slogan, the report stated.
