PORTLAND (WGME) The Lewiston mass shooting victims families and survivors are seeking damages from the U.S. government for wrongful death, injuries and emotional distress. Those involved in the lawsuit say that they want accountability. The allegations and evidence outlined in the civil complaint are what they hope forces the federal government's hand.
Many of the details in the lawsuit are not necessarily new but do paint the clearest picture yet of the alleged failures the victims and their families believe led to the tragedy nearly two years ago. They cite sworn testimony from Army officials given to the commission investigating the shooting.
Details from the shooter's confidential medical records were also referenced. A judge granted survivors access to those normally confidential records last year.
The attorneys for the victims, who are from both local and national law firms, say they've been successful in trials against federal agencies in the past after mass shootings and want to see not only justice, but systemic change.
