WASHINGTONThe No. 2 Treasury Department official was pushed out of his job after frustrating President Trump and feuding with those close to him, according to people familiar with the matter.
Michael Faulkender, the deputy Treasury secretary, departed from the administration this week after Trump was convinced he wasnt aligned with the overall vision of his second term. Trump was also advised that Faulkender was too aligned with the views of former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who the president recently criticized for encouraging him to select Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, these people said. Trump has regularly railed against Powell in recent months.
Faulkender was assistant secretary for economic policy at Treasury during Mnuchins tenure in Trumps first term as president. While Trump was out of office, Faulkender was part of the America First Policy Institute, a Trump-aligned think tank created in 2021.
Faulkender was confirmed to the Treasury post by the Senate in March, and as deputy ran the departments day-to-day operations. His exit marks the latest in a chaotic stretch for the Treasury Department and leaves a crucial job unfilled.
