have some kind of book out that supposedly fleshes out some background info on them. It is targeted at the voters who are voracious readers and also something of interest to the academics.

It also gives them an opportunity (as is noted in the OP) of going on "book tours" and for the high-profile politicos, that also means TV & radio (and also now "podcast" / "streaming" ) interviews, and broadcast "book reviews".

CSPAN3 even has a show called "BookTV", that focuses on politically-themed, usually nonfiction books, including autobiographies, biographies, and books about historic periods and/or events - https://www.c-span.org/bookTv/

I.e., it's automatic "free" media exposure. And for someone who is a former-VP, she would be in high demand.
