As an environmental attorney he led the founding of the Waterkeeper Alliance. A significant part of riverkeepers work is advocating to keep agricultural runoff out of rivers and estuaries. Glyphosate (Roundup) is an important disruptor of aquatic ecosystems, harming fish directly and also killing plants that provide them with habitat and food. When glyphosate breaks down it adds excess phosphorous to the water, fueling the growth of harmful blue-green algae.
