The story was, close election, 1800s or early 1900s, one candidate stops public appearances a few days before Election Day, surrogates continue a vigorous campaign, he wins narrowly, then the morning after the election the local party bosses announced he had passed away during celebration in the wee hours. That meant the party could appoint a replacement. The other party claimed he'd actually died and his body was kept on ice until after the voting was done.

I can't remember which party was which or even rough dates, just part of the local color they incorporated into the program. So it wouldn't be the first time that news of a politician being mortal got suppressed for a few days while certain arrangements were made
