Since the illegal annexation and occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014, ethnic Ukrainians and the indigenous Crimean Tatar population have faced systemic, state-endorsed atrocities. International watchdogs like the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) and Amnesty International have classified these acts as war crimes and potential crimes against humanity.The recorded atrocities, human rights violations, and campaigns to erase Ukrainian identity include the following:

Enforced Disappearances and Extrajudicial Killings

Abductions by Proxy Forces: Paramilitary groups, such as the "Crimean self-defense," and the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) have routinely abducted pro-Ukrainian activists.Reshat Ametov: A Crimean Tatar activist who was kidnapped during a peaceful protest in March 2014 and later found dead with signs of brutal torture, widely recognized as the first victim of the occupation.

Unresolved Disappearances: The OHCHR has documented dozens of enforced disappearances where victims were tortured to force self-incrimination, with zero accountability or prosecutions by local authorities.

Torture and Inhumane Detention Conditions

The Simferopol Detention Network: Secret and official facilities, such as the newly integrated SIZO No. 2 in Simferopol, are utilized to hold civilians abducted from mainland Ukraine (e.g., Kherson and Zaporizhzhia) alongside local dissenters.

Systematic Abuse: Detainees are routinely subjected to regular beatings, electric shocks, psychological degradation, and denial of legal counsel to break them into signing fabricated confessions for the FSB.

Punitive Psychiatry: Soviet-style forced psychiatric incarceration has been revived to silence political prisoners who object to the occupation.

"Filtration" Camps and Illegal Conscription

Filtration Checks: Civil populations attempting to cross the administrative border between mainland Ukraine and Crimea are subjected to abusive "filtration checks". Those who fail are systematically detained.

Forced Conscription: In direct violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, Russia enforces military conscription on the occupied population, drafting local Ukrainians and Tatars to fight against their own country. Raids targeting communities have sparked mass displacement.

Cultural and Identity Eradication (Russification)

Elimination of Language: The de facto authorities have entirely suppressed the Ukrainian language, eradicating Ukrainian-language tuition from regional schools.
