Precisely.

Some tiny, never-to-be-acknowledged part of him knows he is a huge phony. If he were as secure in his opinion of himself as he likes top pretend he is, he wouldn't be so petty and vengeful, and criticism would roll off him like the proverbial water off a duck's back.
