(55,458 posts)their mental acuity is affected, sometimes due to blood circulation to the brain, sleep patterns, and other medical conditions.
My father was a cardiologist/internist. Really knew his stuff. Kept up with medical developments. Outside of medicine, he was the one with the balls to do The Times Sunday Crossword with a pen. He could recall small details from years past at the drop of a hat.
After 80 until he died at 92, his mentation changed. Critical thinking dropped to about 15%. Loved FOX News and was apt to quote Newt Gingrich at dinner at least three times. Didn't pay his bills for almost a year and refused to let any of us at least draft checks for him to sign. And this included his cherished country club membership, where you were voted out for nonpayment. He let his dog crap on our mother's $40,000 Persian rug. And more.
And he continued to get into fender-benders and hid them from us.
While he may had the same IQ, he was blocked from using it. I really don't know how this works. All I know is that his thinking and personality changed irreparably after a certain age and if he maintained a high IQ, it didn't matter.
