Zoo staff cared for him after his mother rejected him. They gave him the plushie as a comfort object.

I googled him just now because I hadn't heard of him before and wanted to see what he looked like. According to the Google AI summary: "he has successfully integrated into his monkey troop and no longer relies on his stuffed toy for comfort.
