New York lawmakers eye multiple redistricting amendments [View all]

ALBANY, New York — Democratic state lawmakers are considering passage of several state constitutional amendments that would change New York’s redistricting process.

The strategy is meant to give Empire State Democrats maximum flexibility when determining how aggressive they should be in changing the process to redraw House boundaries, which are now decided by a semi-independent commission.

It’s also a reflection of the cramped legislative calendar in Albany. The 2026 session is scheduled to end June 4, less than three weeks before the state’s June 23 primary election, and Democrats are running short on time to negotiate the contours of the amendment.

As a result, lawmakers may pass multiple versions of a redistricting amendment and then take up a preferred measure next year for the required second passage. Any constitutional change must also be approved by voters in a referendum.
