All women's college under Trump admin probe for enrolling trans students [View all]
The Department of Education said on May 4 that it has opened an investigation into the all women's Smith College in Massachusetts for allowing transgender students to attend.
Smith College has allowed transgender women to attend as students since fall 2015. Smith allows anybody who identifies as a woman to apply: "Smith is a womens college and considers for admission any applicants who self-identify as women; cis, trans, and nonbinary women are eligible to apply to Smith," its website states.
The Department of Education said its Office for Civil Rights investigation will focus on whether Smith's policy violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits educational institutions receiving federal funding from discriminating on the basis of sex, by "admitting biological men and granting them access to women-only spaces, including dormitories, bathrooms, locker rooms, and athletic teams."
The Trump administration has pushed to restrict rights previously afforded to transgender Americans, such as suspending an "X" gender marker on passports and banning transgender women from participating in women's sports. President Donald Trump issued an executive order to recognize only female and male sexes and defining them as "not changeable." Trump said his actions are to protect women, but LGBTQ advocates have widely condemned them as discriminatory.
