People used to consider a release of thousands of helium balloons to be a less dangerous, less polluting alternative to fireworks, and they made a visual spectacle in daytime, unlike fireworks. But too many rubber balloons made it into the guts of sea turtles and there were movements to ban the practice. Unfortunately, sea turtles are still ingesting way too many plastic bags, and the ultrathin bags used nowadays are even more readily blown out to sea.
