BREAKING: Our New Secretary of Homeland Security is an Embarrassment [View all]

We are in a very dangerous moment, warring against Iran, the biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world. So you would think that the Trump administration would take our national security seriously. For a brief moment, it appeared that the president had taken a step in the right direction by firing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, an incompetent, malevolent actor who would be first in the tribunal dock if there were any justice in the world.

But this is Donald Trump we are talking about. The White House just announced that Trump’s new choice for Secretary of Homeland Security is Senator MarkWayne Mullen of Oklahoma. It’s hard to say whether this means that things have gone from bad to worse (it is hard to get much worse than Noem) but there are serious reasons to be concerned about Mullin, based on his record, ethics and temperament.

There are many ways to embarrass yourself in the United States Senate. You can filibuster something ridiculous. You can tweet something regrettable. You can even shout during a hearing.

But it takes a special kind of performance artist to try to start a fistfight during a Senate committee hearing.
