The only part I disagree with is your first paragraph:

I think the student did respond to one or more of the (very broad) prompts. She talked about why she thought the topic of gender isn't worth studying. If the instructor wanted more rigorous responses they should have given stricter instructions.

She did not fulfil the specific instructions. She just went on rant after rant that simply substituted her own personal, religious-based beliefs and her personal opinions for sound empirical evidence.

Other than that, I agree with everything else you posted.
