In reply to the discussion: Poll: In a dramatic shift, Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost [View all]Torchlight
(6,190 posts)92. Not with its current cost
In the early-mid eighties, I could work a summer framing houses and use that to cover all of the next two semesters. These days, it seems like a second job is needed just to pay down the interest on book prices and lab fees.
So yeah... it may not be worth it in absolute dollars given that we're pricing the working class out of college and turning our backs on what the GI Bill showed us could be accomplished otherwise.
But it's worth noting that investing in the education of a nation's people is one of the best, most advantageous benefits a government can accomplish.

What's hilarious is that the degrees now considered "useful" are the ones that were only recently invented

It's not the degrees themselves that are useful, but the habits of mind that the holders of the degrees have developed

If a student wants to attend an out of state college charging $60k a year tuition, taxpayers should have to pay it ?
