3. A lot of conjecture and assumptions within the first couple minutes.

Governor of WV assumed they were killed, when he was told of the situation soon after it happened, and said so to reporters. News reports ran with it. He walked it back about 15 minutes later.
WH was in total disarray from the start; multiple suspects -no, one suspect, suspect on the loose, suspect wounded, both NG were killed, no, one was killed the other wounded, no, both in the hospital in critical condition.
Then, of course stories about who was to blame for the suspect being in the country.
It's a cluster, and it's always better to wait for the Wurlitzer to slow down before believing anything.
