ME-SEN: Beshear, Whitmer endorse Janet Mills in Maine Senate race [View all]

Two high-profile Democratic governors, widely seen as 2028 presidential contenders, announced this week that they’re endorsing Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) in the Democratic Senate primary to take on Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).

“With all the chaos coming out of Washington, D.C., Maine needs a fighter in the U.S. Senate who’s going to stand up for working people and beat Susan Collins, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse my good friend and colleague, Janet Mills,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in a video posted to social platform X.

Whitmer lauded Mills’s track record on issues like Medicaid expansion and free community college.

In a separate video shared by Mills, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) praised her for taking on the president as his administration threatened to withhold funding for Maine over the state allowing transgender women to participate in women’s sports.
