He had given orders to never wake him up under any circumstances.
Can you imagine this, his country is at war, and only he is allowed to make
decisions but he is not available 24/7. Another narcissist who doesn't care
about anyone but himself.
So the German generals did not have the authority to make decisions on their own without his approval. They could have easily moved some German divisions to France right away and
given the Allies a much more difficult time of it.
Even when Hitler woke up he did not understand what was happening and downplayed
the invasion. The officers on the ground knew exactly what they were looking at.
Yes it was greatest German intelligence failure of the war. They were totally clueless
about the impending invasion and Hitler and his higher ranking officers were relaxing
and having a good time at their retreat hideaways.
By the end of June, the Allies had landed on the Normandy shores over 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies. Those men and materials had been on the move for months before the invasion. And the Germans had no idea at all. How could the intel services have missed this? The British were superb spies and had planted false information in the German spy network. Hitler was convinced that if an invasion came it would take place in Italy or Calais.
The Allies together made a brilliant deception campaign which totally fooled Germany.
By the way, by intimidating the US Generals, Trump is doing the same kind of thing.
Making American generals afraid to make decisions in the field in real time.
